Cooking up a treat for charity

The Claughtons team took on a charity challenge for the Smile Foundation, and there was no escape from the Devil’s Kitchen ...

The eight-strong team, from the Melton-based office and education furniture specialist and stationery and supplies company, competed against local business H&H – narrowly missing out on the victory by only a point.

The teams each cooked a three-course meal for 80 people, with the dinner guests asked to pay what they felt was a fair price for the food. If you can’t take the heat, you’ve got to get out of the kitchen.

Debbie Page, Claughtons’ marketing manager, said: “It was a fantastic day and everyone had a really good time – even if it was utterly tiring.

“We all started at lunchtime and didn’t stop until everything was wrapped up at 10.30pm – it was certainly a long day but well worth it.

“I think everyone would agree we gained a real insight into the catering and hospitality industry – there is so much you just don’t get to see.

“We raised a lot of money for the Smile Foundation and we hope it goes some way to helping this fantastic group of people continue to help those people so in need of the help.”

The teams carried out every task from peeling potatoes, getting the food out and waiting on the guests.

The event was held at the Holiday Inn, Hull Marina – with Claughtons’ managing director Gerard Toplass acting as a waiter.

The £2,800 raised will now go to the Smile Foundation – which aims to change the lives of people in Hull and East Yorkshire by supporting different charities across the region.

The foundation is currently supporting three charities; The Friends of Hull Memory Clinic, which helps people who suffer from memory loss, Hornsea Inshore Rescue, an independently voluntary run inshore rescue which covers the majority of the Holderness coastline, Sunshine House, which provides an invaluable nursing resource which ranges from respite care through to end of life care for children with life limiting illnesses, and Hull Families Project which offers support to families in Hull who are facing difficulty or crisis.
